FILMMAKER'S NOTES
My Great Great Great Uncle Built Churches is a short documentary film directed by Christian Jessup, following his family as they visit seven historic rock churches built by his great uncle, Bob Childress. As the family travels from church to church, Buford Jessup shares touching stories and memories of his Uncle Bob, bringing to life the rich history and personal significance of these stone churches.
Jessup edited the film to create an immersive experience for viewers, inviting them to join the journey without a strict linear narrative. The black and white cinematography enhances the timeless beauty of the churches and the surrounding countryside, while the minimal dialogue allows the audience to focus on the visual and musical elements.
In addition to his direction, Christian Jessup composed the music for the documentary, which won Best Original Score at the IndieEye Film Awards in July 2022. The music, described as moving and reverent with a southern touch, perfectly complements the serene and reflective nature of the film.
My Great Great Great Uncle Built Churches has been praised for its emotional depth and beautiful cinematography. DJ Ford from the IndieEye Film Awards highlighted the film’s "soothing score" and the impactful black and white visuals, noting how perfectly the rock churches were framed to showcase their beauty.
