A New Score Strikes Back was part of a research project for Gardner-Webb University's Award-Winning Filmmakers seminar. For this project, I wrote entirely new music for the finale of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. This time, I kept the same themes that John Williams wrote for the original film, but scored in the style of Hans Zimmer. First, I conducted research about Zimmer's life, inspirations, and composing methods. Next, I analyzed three Zimmer scores to find composing trends and trademarks - Inception, Interstellar, and Blade Runner 2049. Finally, I composed music for the finale of Empire Strikes Back (the Cloud City sequences), using Zimmer's style and temp-tracking some of his pieces. The end result provides insight into how a modern composer such as Zimmer may have gone about scoring a Star Wars film.
